NJCA’s Free Direct Services for New Jersey Families

In addition to our issue advocacy work, New Jersey Citizen Action provides free direct services in English and Spanish to individuals and families across New Jersey. These free services include: HUD-certified housing, rental, and foreclosure counseling; free tax preparation services; healthcare enrollment assistance and education; financial coaching; and fair housing education, outreach, and investigations. Free HUD-certified Housing Counseling: NJCA provides free one-on-one housing counseling services in English and Spanish. With offices in north, central, and southern New Jersey, these services are available in all 21 counties across the state. Due to the pandemic, all services are currently being provided virtually and by phone. NJCA’s free counseling services include:
  • First-time homebuyer counseling & education;
  • Rental counseling;
  • Foreclosure counseling;
  • General credit counseling;
  • Home improvement counseling;
  • Assistance in applying for COVID-19 emergency rental assistance and homeowner assistance.

Free Tax preparation services: NJCA offers free tax preparation services in English and Spanish year-round, including tax filing assistance, tax counseling for the elderly, ITIN application assistance & renewal, and help with accessing Economic Impact/Stimulus payments and expanded Child Tax Credits. Our tax preparation services are available virtually and by drop-off to our storefront office in downtown Newark.

Free Healthcare Enrollment Assistance & Education: Citizen Action provides free one-on-one healthcare enrollment assistance to connect NJ residents to affordable health care coverage through NJ’s health insurance marketplace, GetCoveredNJ, as well as NJFamilyCare. Assistance is available in English, Spanish and Hindi. NJCA also offers free health care education workshops virtually and in person.

Free Financial Coaching: NJCA provides free one-on-one financial coaching in English and Spanish to help individuals set financial goals, build a personalized action plan and budget, understand your credit report and credit score, reduce debt, and save for the future. All coaching services are currently provided virtually and by phone.

Fair Housing: Citizen Action is a HUD-designated fair housing organization that coordinates education, outreach, counseling and investigation across New Jersey, ensuring everyone knows their rights and advocating on behalf of those whose rights have been violated.
 
Housing is a right. It is illegal to discriminate in the sale or rental of housing, including against individuals seeking a mortgage or housing assistance, or in other housing-related activities.

Consumer Workshops & Webinars: NJCA provides free consumer workshops across the state in English and Spanish. These workshops cover various topics, including fair housing and consumer protection, avoiding scams and frauds, and basic financial education, among others.

Discounted Home Heating Oil: The New Jersey Citizen Action Oil Group uses collective bargaining power to negotiate discounted prices on heating oil and act as an information resource and advocate for New Jersey heating oil consumers.
